'So You Think You Can Dance' July 1 Performance and result

"So You Think You Can Dance" is really strapped for things to do in their two hours on Wednesday, because much of it becomes filler and best to fast forward through. Is it the top ten yet? Because that's always fun when they have to do two different dances per week! We're almost there.
This week it starts out with a recap of the auditions up until now, then the dancers all intro as usual. Cat looks completely fantastic. Every time she is on the stage, you can't help but be distracted by her gorgeous pink dress. Her stylist needs to work on the rest of the show! The guest judge this week is Mia Michaels, which is always a treat because she's a very honest person. Sometimes too honest. Right off the bat Cat brings up the Mia/Brandon controversy, and Mia kindly says she has changed her mind about him. She does not name names, but Nigel does it for her.
The question of the week is how their month has gone so far. It's not even worth recapping as it is clearly a plea for making up time, and the dancers just talk about how awesome and educational it has been. So let's get to the dances.
So You Think You Can DanceFirst up is Brandon and Janette, and huzzah for that. They want to get Mia dealing with Brandon right up front, and this couple is without a doubt the best of the competition so far. Each week they have excelled, so the rest of the show will probably be downhill from here. They are doing a cha-cha. They play the Pussycat Dolls and I groan, but as always Janette and Brandon are completely wonderful. There is nothing this pair seems incapable of doing. The judges all love it, and Mary puts them on the tamale train ... after really critiquing them. I started to mute the TV for her scream, but I like when she gives real advice. Then she screams. Mia tells Brandon she is hardest on the students she thinks are the best, so he should know she'll be vicious to him for all the right reasons. Brandon cries and I'll admit something got in my eye for a minute. Remember Brandon is contemporary so Mia is like his goddess, and her hatred for him must have been very painful.
Next is Kayla and Kupono, who aren't really favorites of mine. They had their first dance as a partner last week for a nice waltz, and this week is contemporary with Sonya. It's supposed to be vampire-ish and even uses a song from the Twilight soundtrack. Meh. There's a lot of writhing around and lifts. It's not that interesting, to be honest, but the judges love Sonya so it's about to be praised. Kayla is clearly a better dancer than Kupono here, so he'd best watch out if he makes it to the top ten. As a solo artist he'll have some trouble. The judges loved them both, but like always they tongue bathe Kayla to a stupid degree. She's good, but there are better dancers on the show.
Randi and Evan! Yay, the cutest little duo. They are doing Broadway this week with a new choreographer, Joey Dowling, who is like a giant, pretty dancer. She's seriously about six feet tall, and they both look tiny next to her. They seem to dance it well, and I'm a fan of both of them, but the dance itself left me feeling nothing. It was boring. A little too obvious Broadway, and neither of them were really pushed to a high place this week. But as always the judges have to praise the choreographers, especially new ones, so it'll be blamed on the dancers. They all think it was an entertaining routine and they liked it, but it just wasn't great. They are more critical of Evan, because it is his style and should've been better. Personally I disagree, but I don't have to suck up to the choreographer.
Next up is Jason and Caitlin, they who have been in the bottom too many times. These two are adorable, but they just can't seem to get the fanbase going. To be fair, Evan, Phillip, and Brandon had fans coming into this season. That's probably not very fair to everyone else. This week they have a weird Brian Friedman routine which surprisingly was really fascinating to watch. The costume was annoying as Caitlin looks like a dominatrix with tinfoil on, but the rest is really fun. Weird and fun. I doubt many people will like it, but technically they danced well and got into the characters. Mary straight forwardly didn't like it, but Mia and Nigel point out that Brian doesn't always work for everyone, and the two at least went all the way.
Phillip! I have to stop playing favorites, don't I? Well the judges do! Humf. Anyway Phillip and Jeanine are doing another hip-hop routine, and Phil clearly has the luck of the irish for that. Taboleon choreograph this dance and it involves a chain locking the two together. They do as well as you expect, but Jeanine admirably keeps up with her partner. This was a really enjoyable routine to watch, and the chain was used to the full advantage with tons of twists and turns. Oh, Mary calls Taboleon Nappy Tabs so I guess that's their real nickname. Mia says the chain got in the way of the performance, but otherwise really liked it. She's the only one who says any criticism and it's a fair one.
Phew okay, the next pair is Melissa and Ade. This was probably the highlight of the evening for me, because it is the first time the show has classical ballet as an option. Melissa is the ballerina so this does feel intentionally fixed, but that's fine since it is best that a real ballerina brings it onto the show. We have Thordal Christensen as the choreographer, and my goodness is it beautiful. If you've never had the chance to see ballet and enjoyed this routine, go see a live performance as soon as you can. Melissa does perfectly, wowing the audience with the skill and precision her specialty requires, and Ade keeps up with her with strong lifts. Nigel pretends that his show is the only reason anyone will ever know about ballet, but everyone warmly embraces ballet. Will the viewers? That's hard to say.
Before the final dancers, the show introduces everyone to Dizzy Feet. It's a foundation made by Nigel, Adam Shankman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Katie Holmes. What? Ooo they said Katie was going to be on the show this season. That episode is going to get a huge popularity spike. We learn that the foundation gives scholarships to underprivileged dancers (see more at dizzyfeetfoundation.org). Katie Holmes will be on the 100th episode, that's July 23rd, doing a Tyce tribute to Judy Garland. Yay!
Last but (mostly) not least is Karla and Vitolio. This is their first partnership and they are doing the kiss of death, the quickstep. Only one couple has really nailed it that I remember, and that was eventual winner Sabra and best ballroom dancer Pasha from season three. It's not bad at all, and they even do a great costume change with Karla switching from ugly polka dots to sexy sparkly orange. They both do well, although sometimes lose their faces in utter terror for the steps, but it's definitely a plus at the end of the performance.
Thursday night at 9 PM EST "So You Think You Can Dance" has the results show. Who will be in the bottom three? I'm going to guess Kayla and Kupono, Jason and Caitlin, and ... either Randi and Evan or Melissa and Ade. The last one depends on the audience; do they like ballet?
